Mobile Cell Phone News - Bluetooth aficionados are as loyal as they come in the Techie world. But ... that doesn't mean there aren't some improvements to Bluetooth that could make things better.

For example .....

Why is it that Bluetooth mice and other devices typically require a USB adapter even if many laptops are sold today with native Bluetooth? It seems very difficult to get mice to work with the native Bluetooth. It is really not that much fun to try to connect/disconnect the dongle or prevent yourself from bumping it while setting up a presentation.

On a broader scale, it would seem that an easy way to connect and use Bluetooth would be excellent. Is it really standard, or does it have some distance to go?

I think many can sympathize with the distress over Bluetooth usability. Many of the first generation Bluetooth devices used way to much power and were always out of batteries. On later products some vendors seemed to abandon standards, like Logitech, who uses a proprietary Bluetooth connection for some of their headphones or other vendors that do or don't use the same support standards, example stereo headphones and the a2dp standard. For mice as you mentioned you have some of the same type of issues.

In addition to these issues connection disconnections buttons on most Bluetooth devices seem to be tiny and hard to use. As far as mice specifically go Logitech builds some non Bluetooth wireless mice that use the receivers so small that they are not precariously placed and endangering the wellbeing of your laptop/receiver. And let's not forget the easiest option to connecting a mouse - a wired mouse, where you always know when it's connected and when not and you never need to worry about batteries.

Overall the "problem(s)" are caused by the device vendor (laptop, mouse, headset, phone , etc) not including all of the software service providers (ie drivers) in the Bluetooth software on that device. So for instance a headset works fine with a phone but would not pair with a hp PDA, yet the hp PDA will pair with a laptop for internet access.

Second trying to explain this to a user is basically too technical and in reality should not be required, ie the device should meet user expectations of its use and have the software support built in. For the vendor however this means adding more cost in terms of the additional software.

So my view is make all devices have all the expected software and support available OR ensure the packaging/manual is clear on what the device does do - CSR who supplies 80% of the Bluetooth chips could help by being more market orientated and ensuring this message gets through the vendors and out to the end user. We would benefit and so would CSR.

Another issue ... Bluetooth support in Windows has been extremely poor up to now with only limited profile support. This has meant that vendors have to supply a Bluetooth stack with their device and due to licensing issues that also means they have to provide a Bluetooth dongle.

You can get lucky and get a laptop with the same Bluetooth stack as supplied by your peripheral vendor but it's pot luck unless you know what to look for. The most common stacks are Toshiba, Widcomm and Blue Soleil but they all require licenses built into the Bluetooth dongle for full functionality. Vista has better Bluetooth support so the problem may start to ease.

The most oft heard issue concerns batteries. My brother and his wife got Bluetooth headsets for each of their cellphones. It didn't take long to discover that battery life was pitiful to the point of useless .... and the detection and connection process is a real pain in the ear.

So to close .... the likely top suggestion with the best chance of making the most Bluetooth users happy is better batteries, auto-discovery and connection.

GPS - GPS Navigation Systems Have Come a Long Way

Gps systems have come a long way since they were first designed for the US military. The first signal from NAVSTAR 1 was received on Feb. 22, 1978. NAVSTAR 1 was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California and was the first of 24 satellites that make up the Global Positioning System (GPS). The first generation of satellites that make up the Global Positioning Systems 24 satellites were launched between Feb. 22, 1978 and Oct. 9, 1985. Since it First became operational the Global Positioning Systems has revolutionized the way America goes to war and provides a GPS system in which the world relies on for precise navigation.

The Global Positioning System's constellation of orbiting satellites is managed by the United States Air Force 50th Space Wing. The unit is the host wing at Schriever Air Force Base, located in east Colorado Springs, Colorado. They are responsible for tracking and maintaining the command and control, warning, navigational, and communications satellites for Air Force Space Command as well as the Global Positioning System satellites. Full Operational Capability was declared by NAVSTAR in April 1995 (NAVSTAR is an acronym for NAVigation Satellite Timing and Ranging, and is the official U.S. Government name given to the GPS satellite system).

The US government granted the Global Positioning System available for civilian use in the late 1980s and with no subscription fees or setup charges to use the GPS system the civilian GPS market exploded, especially in the last decade. A new generation of sophisticated GPS satellites are replacing the older satellites and there are now 34 GPS satellites in orbit that provide combat capability for military applications and aircraft navigation aids. Civilian applications include ATMs, bank and stock market transactions as well as power grid management. Currently 31 of the 34 GPS satellites in orbit transmit navigation and timing signals to civilian and military users around the world.

The civilian GPS system wasn't always as it is today and the US military is still keeping the most accurate Global Positioning Systems available classified for national security. But GPS upgrades for two new civilian signals to enhanced user accuracy and reliability, particularly with respect to aviation safety were planned in 1998. Then on May 2, 2000 "Selective Availability" was discontinued as a result of the 1996 executive order, allowing users to receive a non-degraded GPS signal globally, and in 2004 QUALCOMM announced the successful tests of assisted GPS for mobile phones that led the way for the GPS aided cell phones that are widely used today.

In 2005, the first third generation GPS satellite was launched and began transmitting a second civilian signal for enhanced user performance. Then in September of 2007 the Air Force completed a four-phase transition of the Global Positioning Systems ground segment to it's new Architecture Evolution Plan. The ground segment's provide command and control of the satellites and generates the navigation message for satellites to broadcast to the users GPS device to calculate their earth's position. The new Gps satellites include new high-powered, anti-jam military-code, along with other accuracy, reliability, and data integrity improvements for both civil and military users. This modernized version of the world's greatest free utility was designed to ensure the US has the most precise and secure positioning, navigation and timing capability through 2030.

Europe and Russia develop their own GPS

In 2004 the United States signed an agreement with the European Community establishing cooperation with Europe's planned Galileo system. Galileo is a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that is currently being built by the European Union and is separate from but complimentary to the United States Global Positioning System. The European Union's Galileo system should be operational by 2013. The European Community's political aim is to provide an independent GPS system that the European nations can rely on in times of war or political disagreement, because both Russia or the USA could disable use of their national systems by others (through encryption).

The Russian GPS system GLONASS is a radio-based satellite navigation system that was developed by the former Soviet Union and now operated for the Russian government by the Russian Space Forces. Like the European GPS system the Russian GPS system also functions separate from but is complimentary to the United States Global Positioning System. Russia began launching satellites for their GPS system into space on October 12, 1982 and was completed in 1995. The system rapidly fell into disrepair fallowing the collapse of the Russian economy but in 2001 the Russian government began restoring the system with hopes of restoring global coverage by the end of 2009.

GPS Systems today

Depending on the GPS unit a GPS receiver only needs a signal from 3-4 satellites to calculate the units position and will work in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or set up fees like with a cell phone to operate GPS receivers and although some GPS receivers have extra features like real time traffic updates that will have a monthly charge, some GPS receivers like Garmins Nuvi "T" series come with free live traffic for the life of the unit. Today's GPS is extremely accurate thanks to their parallel multi-channel design. Garmin's 12 parallel channel receivers are very quick to lock onto satellites when first turned on and they maintain a strong lock even in dense foliage or city's with tall buildings because they continuously track signals from up to 12 satellites at any given time. Even if a 12 parallel channel GPS receiver loses signals from 8 satellites at once it will still function properly.

WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) was developed by the Federal Aviation Administration to augment the Global Positioning System to improve its accuracy, integrity, and availability. WAAS was originally intended to enable aircraft to rely on GPS for all phases of flight, including the precision approach to airport's within its coverage area. All though originally intended for aviation most GPS receivers today are WAAS-enabled including automotive, boating chartplotters and hand-held units. WAAS uses a network of ground based reference stations, in North America and Hawaii, to measure small variations in the GPS satellites' signals.

Measurements from these reference stations are routed to master stations and then they send correction messages to geostationary WAAS satellites. Those satellites then broadcast the correction messages back to Earth, where WAAS-enabled GPS receivers use the correction data while computing their positions to improve accuracy. WAAS enabled GPS receivers are accurate to within 3 meters and that make them the most accurate GPS receivers for civilian use on the market today. In fact a WAAS-enabled GPS receiver can even give you directions right down to the lane your car is traveling in (as long as the mapping program supports "lane assist" directions) and With no additional equipment or fees required to take advantage of WAAS-enabled GPS receivers they are becoming as common as cell phone's.

The departments goal is to have vehicles slow down and be careful through those locations. Your GPS is not a radar detector, it does not jam any signals. Since you have it in your car, why not turn it on and have it warn you of any upcoming speed traps or intersections with traffic cameras?

Here is what you should look for in obtaining a POI database for your GPS. You want a database that has the largest number of locations in the database. Hundreds of cameras are being added across the country daily. One firm has over 140,000 locations in their database already. If you have less than 10,000, you're not doing yourself much good.

You also want the database to be easily downloaded to your particular brand of GPS. Make sure the provider has their POI database formatted for your brand. Some have a generic database that takes a few steps of reformatting for your brand. It is easiest to have a database already formatted for your particular GPS brand.

You want the database updated often. While you may not upload the POI locations everyday, you want a provider to be updating the database every day. That way when you do choose to refresh your database, you are getting the latest locations known.

Lastly, you want to be able to upload your database as often as possible. People who drive for a living may want to refresh their database daily. Some providers limit the number of times you can refresh your database in a set time period.

Costs can vary for the database. While some are free, in general, those tend to be the smallest amount of locations and hardest to load. You can buy a monthly subscription, yearly, or the best bet seems to be the lifetime subscriptions. The simplified version of how a GPS works is fairly easy to comprehend. Satellites transmit signals and the portable GPS units receive signals.

There are 24 satellites that encompass the globe. Thus at any given time, theoretically, 12 satellites should be in view of a GPS receiver anywhere on earth. The GPS receiver sees these satellites and calculates its position on earth based on its position to the satellites. It is similar to to triangulation except the GPS systems use time to calculate its earthly location. The GPS receiver knows when the satellite sends a signal and measures how long it took to receive the signal sent by the satellite. Each satellite transmits data that gives its location and time. All satellites are synchronized to transmit at the same instant. Because the satellites distance to a given point on earth is different for each satellite, the time it takes the signal to reach the portable GPS device also varies depending on the device's location.

Based on the time and satellite location information, which are both known, it is possible to calculate spheres of location on earth from each satellite. That is, at any point on the sphere, it takes the same time to receive the signal from a particular satellite. After four satellites have been "acquired" (seen) the GPS receiver can calculate its' location (longitude and latitude) on earth. This position is based on where the four spheres intersect.

The portable GPS then converts that information into an easy to understand display on your GPS device such as the location on a map. Today most portable GPS receivers advertise an accuracy of +/- 49 ft, but many perform much better than that.

I have to say, I have used both the Nuvi 660 in a friend's car and just recently I purchased a Garmin nüvi 760 4.3-Inch for my own car. I know that there are a lot of people who are wondering if they should spend the hard earned money and upgrade to the 760 or they should simply stay with the 660. For a person who has used both, such as myself, there really is no comparison.

GPS can only do this because of the atomic clocks that it uses to transmit the time signals. These time signals travel, like all radio signals, at the speed of light so an inaccuracy of just 1 millisecond (1/1000 of a second) could result in the satellite navigation being nearly 300 kilometres out.

Because these clocks have to be so accurate, they make an ideal source of time for a NTP time server. NTP (Network Time Protocol) is the software that distributes the time from the time server to the network. GPS time and UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) the civil timescale is not quite the same thing but are base don the same timescale so NTP has no trouble converting it. Using a dedicated NTP GPS server a network can be realistically synchronised to within a few milliseconds of UTC

The GPS clock is another term often given to a GPS time server. The GPS network consists of 21 active satellites (and a few spare) 10,000 miles in orbit above the Earth and each satellite circles the Earth twice a day. Designed for satellite navigation, A GPS receiver needs at least three satellites to maintain a position. However, in the case of a GPS clock just one satellite is required making it far easier to obtain a reliable signal.

Each satellite continuously transmits its own position and a time code. The time code is generated by an onboard atomic clock and is highly accurate, it has to be as this information is used by the GPS receiver to triangulate a position and if it was just half a second out the Sat Nav. unit would be inaccurate by thousands of miles.

TomTom hopes to continue their success and worldwide popularity with the release of their 910 GO, 920 G0, 930 GO and 940 GO GPS devices. And with each new model, TomTom manages to perfect and refine their popular GPS devices, creating an unmatched reputation in personal navigation devices. The user can program this little GPS to call out directions in your language - no matter where you are. However, some users have complained that the 910 GO has a rather outdated POI database - a database that has been known to make special notes for places of interest which no longer exist. Some reviewers have complained that for some routes, the estimated time of arrival can be off by a noticeable degree, especially if you're somewhat familiar with the routes your 910 will suggest. But most importantly, the 920 is the first of TomTom's GPS units to offer voice recognition programming so that drivers could enter in their destinations by simply talking to the machine. Already, many users have praised this development. After all, it makes it much easier for driver's to program the device without having to take their eyes off the road to program the unit much unlike other units in which drivers needed a companion to help program the GPS while the driver was actually driving. The 920 was also the first GPS system to offer the ability to pre-plan and save trips, as well as the first to offer a built-in FM transmitter.

Also, the 920 offers the TomTom Map Share feature in which TomTom users can update maps and routes for each other - in the event of new construction, a new building development or so on. Some users have complained that they wish they could shut off the bossy-sounding GPS voice which shouts out directions. Apparently, the voice is quite annoying while you're sitting in bumper to bumper traffic as it tells you that your turn is half a mile ahead! There have been reports of users complaining about how the weather and traffic services don't seem to work with some Verizon and Sprint cellular hand sets. And the most common complaint in the countless reports we've seen is that despite the usefulness of the voice recognition program, users frequently get frustrated when it doesn't recognize certain sounds as well as it should, forcing users to go back to typing in their addresses for directions. The 930 GPS system has many of the same features of TomTom's previous models but thanks to a great redesign looks much like the iPhone and the iPod Touch and the remote control's design has been changed to match. The power switch has been moved to the top, making it easier for users to turn the device off and on and the speaker and external antennae jack have been moved to the rear. Some new additions include a newly developed technology known as Active Lane Guidance which gives exacting detail for drivers who are driving on complex, multi-lane highways, Interstates and the like who need to know how many lanes they might need to cross over to get to their exit, which way their particular lane goes and so on. A simple series of icons show the lanes and points out which lanes drivers need to be in to make proper turns and the like.

This feature has worked very well on major highways and streets but unfortunately not on more rural, country roads which can be quite frustrating if you're making trips in the country. Another new technology includes a program known as Static Intersection Images which is designed to show where highways and intersections intersect; assisting drivers in simplifying complicated driving directions. TomTom has made it easier for users to type in addresses as you can switch from a touch screen QWERTY-style keyboard, an ABC-style keyboard and an option for left handed users.

However, in a few reviews, users have complained that the imaging process involved in the program works intermittently at best. One reviewer complained that the imaging process generally seemed to work somewhere in the half mile to quarter mile range which simply isn't acceptable if you're driving at highway speeds. The IQ Routes programming has been greatly updated, so that it gives much more accurate estimations on arrival times. Users of the 910 and 920 frequently complained about how estimated driving times were usually off by at least 20%, IQ Routes now will also allow you to plan out routes several days in advance, figuring out traditional traffic flow history and giving you a fairly accurate estimate time based on traffic flow. Also, there's the updated RDSTMC traffic receiver which works via cellular phone transmissions for much more accurate traffic readings.

The flimsy dash mount of the 910 and 920 have been replaced with a much sturdier dash mount. Some reviewers have complained that the 930's voice recognition doesn't work too well, and many have resorted to just typing in their destinations instead. Other reviews have complained about the amount of glare which comes from the shinier touchscreen. And we have even come across reviews in which users have complained about the number of screens and options one has to go through in order to change menu preferences. Certainly, that's frustrating but for the most part users have loved the 930 and its accurate positioning capabilities, and any complaints such as screen glare are subjective to the individual user. TomTom Go 940

The 940 GO GPS system is will be among the most technologically advanced GPS units out in the market. TomTom's engineers have further updated their IQ Route programming so that every route will be determined by historical time travel information for every road for every single day of the week while continuously adapting to changing road conditions to constantly give drivers the fastest, most economically sound routes possible. Setting itself apart from the other GPS units on the market, the 940 will have up to the minute weather and traffic updates - and those are useful for just about any driver out there. But what the new 940 GPS unit will have that no other unit will have yet is a local search connection through Google. Users can find local pizzerias, seafood restaurants or anything they'd wish and they could easily find it and get directions. Of course, there are the other programs which TomTom users love to use. The tech savvy user will love the new 940 GO!

All of TomToms devices despite their different technological developments come equipped with a car charger which you plug in through the built-in cigarette lighter, a desktop mount for home charging and uploads and the customary instruction manual. And they all proudly boast the fact that they're incredibly easy to install and set up.

I will demonstrate how I use the GPS for treasure hunting in the mountains, or an old field where you think there were dwellings in the past with all traces removed by man or the elements.

A lot of times I will use relic or all metal mode when metal detecting with my White's DFX in a field or in the mountains. Yes, depending on where I am at I may get signals on a lot of junk, but even junk can come in handy while trying to put a puzzle together.

Let's say for instance while detecting I find several metal cans, or other metal waste in one generalized location. I will mark the spot with a flag or stick, or if I a not in a real hurry I will mark the spot on my GPS and label it "dump site." If I am in a hurry I will wait until near the end of my search time and mark all spots with my GPS previously marked by flags.

Moving along I find an area with a mixture of horseshoes, horseshoe nails, and square nails along with maybe an old axe head, saddle buckles, etc. That would leave me to believe a barn or stable possibly sat in this location. Again, I would mark the spot with my GPS. As I move along I may find silverware, pots and pans, more square nails, bed springs, etc. This could be where a house or cabin may have stood. I mark this spot as well. Do you see where I a going with this? Once I am back home I upload these coordinates into my map software and get a birds-eye view of the entire area. By doing so I can actually imagine seeing a cabin, barn, corral, etc. If you are looking for a suspected cache this is very important. Most caches are hidden within sight of a cabin or other dwelling so that it can be watched and protected. The majority of caches that I have found have been within 50 yards of a dwelling and some within 25 feet!

Also, if you can't locate a dwelling that you believe should be there getting a birds-eye view of your coordinates may help you find it. Use your imagination!

If your metal detecting preference is high-traffic areas such as parks or schools you can mark the locations you find coins, rings, etc. as well. Over a period of time as you upload these coordinates into your map software you will start seeing a pattern of where the best places to detect and where to avoid.
